Previously known as SASSA benefit was given to a parent or caregiver of a child under 18 with significant mental or physical disability. From October 2025, the grant will pay R2,190 monthly. The grant assists families in meeting the extra costs of caring for a child with a disability, including expenses for medical care, daily support, and special needs services.
The grant is non-taxable, with beneficiaries receiving payment into their bank accounts, SASSA cards, or as cash payments at SASSA pay points.
When Payment Should Begin & How It Works
Although SASSA has announced the new amount to be paid, it has not been disclosed as to the exact payout date in October of the year 2025. By most accounts and looks at past schedules, the Care Dependency Grant is usually paid early in the month, around 2 October, along with all other social grants.
Funds will generally show up in beneficiaries’ accounts or be available for withdrawal 1 to 3 business days afterward.
Who is Eligible for the Grant?
To be granted R2 190 under the Care Dependency Grant, certain conditions have to be fulfilled:
- The child must be under 18 years, with a verified mental or physical disability as certified by a medical practitioner.
- The caregiver is a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a recognized refugee residing in the country.
- The applicant’s household should fall within the income limits. The single applicant’s maximum earning limit is R249,600 per year, while the combined limit of income for a married couple is R499,200.
- The caregiver is not currently being paid for care of that particular child by some other program.
All these above criteria, when the application is received, will be considered by SASSA.
How to Check the Status of Your Grant and Trace Delays
The beneficiaries have several options for tracking or looking into payment delays of the Care Dependency Grant:
- Go to the SASSA website and under the Payment Status tab enter your ID number and telephone to check your status.
- On the Moya App, check your status with their zero-rated “SRD SASSA” service, which charges no data costs.
- Get in touch with SASSA through the toll-free helpline: 0800 60 10 11.
- Send an SMS containing your ID number to obtain the status update at 082 046 8553.
- Go to your nearest SASSA office with an ID number if you need assistance in person.
- While delays or rejections may be given on account of issues with bank details, outdated medical documentation, and on-and-off income testing, they are but some among others.
What to Do If Your Grant Is Late or Declined
If your application gets rejected or your payment doesn’t come through:
- Within 90 days of notification date, you may file for an appeal on the official SASSA appeal portal (SRD appeals site).
- Submit any additional evidence that you may have to prove your rights, i.e., updated medical reports, proof of income, banking details, etc.
- Regularly check the status of your appeal—and SASSA has to respond within 1–3 months.
- If the appeal is rejected, you might want to consider taking this further through the courts, though you should exhaust all other avenues beforehand.
