SRD R370 Grant Extended To 2026: SASSA Confirms New Pay Windows & Milestone Updates

The government of South Africa has announced the extension of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R370 a month through to March 2026. The extension is a breathing space for the millions who rely on this help during the tough economic situation that is still there. Moreover, mainly, the change in the extension refers to the grant’s terms and eligibility criteria.

Significance of the Extension

The SRD grant was initially introduced as a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a source of support for unemployed people. While the government is considering the broader social security reforms, allocating R35.2 billion in the 2025 budget for this program through March 2026 is a clear sign of commitment to vulnerable communities.

Thus, the extension not only assures people who receive the support that they can plan their life and activities but also the use of the period by the officials to look into the structural changes in social support programs.

Payment & Monthly Windows Schedule

Payments of the SRD grant will go on getting done at the end of every month close to the last day, that is, from the 25th day to the 31st day, although the actual date may be altered by weekends and public holidays. Those beneficiaries receiving the payment should keep an eye for SASSA announcements regarding the specific payout period every month.

In most cases, other social grants are paid early in the month, but SRD is managed in such a way as to lessen the overlap and the distribution of the system load, thus, operating differently.

Who Can Be Beneficiary of the SRD Grant

The extension holds the same eligibility requirements as before:

  • You must fall within the age range of 18 to 59
  • Must either be a South African citizen or a legally allowed resident
  • Income must be none or extremely low
  • Not a recipient of any full social grant at the moment (exceptions apply, e.g. if you are getting some child support grants you may still be eligible)
  • Must possess an active bank account in your name
  • Must present ID and proof of residence if required

The regulations are meant to keep the grant money going to the ones that are really in need, and not to the ones who have been already supported through different sources.

What Recipients Should Do

  • Maintain your registration: either reapply every month or verify your information as per SASSA’s requirement.
  • Make sure your bank account details are correct and companiable – incorrect information may delay the payment process.
  • Be attentive to public announcements about the monthly payment dates and any procedural changes.
  • Understand that the extension will last till March 2026 – thus, plan and start looking for other income or support options.
