The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) revealed that the social grants will be raised on two occasions during the year 2025 as part of the new financial relief plan for the poorest people. The first grant increase is scheduled for April and the second one for October after the national budget announcement, which usually happens at the beginning of the year. The objective of this dual change is not only to provide support to the beneficiaries whose lives have been made difficult by the growing prices of goods and services but also to ensure that the values of the grants are equivalent to the prevailing inflation rate.

SASSA’s action will be a boon to the millions of South Africans who count on the monthly grant payments, as it is the case now and before. The Old Age Grant, which is the one for beneficiaries under 75, is expected to increase from R2,090 to R2,190 after the two hikes, and those over 75 would be receiving R2,210, their grant. In the same manner, the Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant will both surpass R2,190, thus keeping the main permanent grants’ parity.
Moreover, the Child Support Grant will increase from R510 to R540, thus giving caregivers a little present that is very meaningful. The Foster Child Grant will rise from R1,130 to R1,190, and the Grant-in-Aid for people needing full-time care will also increase from R510 to R540. These increases might be seen as nonsense, but they actually make a wide gap when summed to the families that live on social assistance for their everyday needs.
Importance of the Double Increase
In the past, SASSA made it a practice to raise the amount of grants once a year only. Nevertheless, during the year 2025, there will be two increases as a measure to give more frequent relief because of the extremely high inflation rate and the slow growth of the economy. The government accepted that even one annual increase was not enough to keep the beneficiaries’ purchasing power at a good level, especially when the prices of food, fuel, and utilities are rising.
The government department that deals with social development not only hopes to maintain the purchasing power of the poorest citizens by increasing their monthly grants but also to prevent them from having to wait 12 months for a wage increase.
Payment Schedule for SASSA 2025
Grant payments will keep on being made according to SASSA’s usual staggered schedule. In general, Older Persons Grants will be the first to be paid out each month, Disability Grants will follow a day later, and finally, Child Support Grants and other categories. It is highly recommended that beneficiaries check the SASSA website or communicate through official social media channels to confirm their specific payment dates.
The money is either deposited directly into bank accounts, SASSA/Postbank cards, or made available at cash collection points for people living in rural areas. Depending on the method used, it may take up to three working days for the payment to be reflected in the account.
