Good News for SASSA Grant Beneficiaries: Gold and Black Card Holders Secure Payments

According to SASSA and Postbank, Gold and Black Cards will continue working as there is a transition period so that no payee of the social grant suffers interruption in his payment. That was then announced because this very much heated up during the process of inquiry into the migration and the possible interruption of payment.

What is the Concern? The Migration from Gold Cards to Black Cards

SASSA is slowly phasing out the older Gold Cards and allowing the new Postbank Black Cards to take precedence on payments. This is to say that payments are becoming more modern and more secure. We encountered a few stumbling blocks, such as compliance issues, technical constraints, and delayed issuance of cards.  A considerable number of grant beneficiaries have, so far, not made the transition from Gold to Black Cards, thus raising fears of the interruption of social grants when the functioning of Gold Cards is suspended.  Well, here is the positive side of things: All Gold Cards are still working while the transition is in progress, so technically, those who have not yet made the switch are not yet suspended.

Here’s What the Announcement Says: Gold Cards Will Still Work

  • Postbank assures that Gold Cards will continue to operate on all payment platforms—cash withdrawals, retail POS terminals, and merchants until such time as they are withdrawn.
  • Which means, even if some of the beneficiaries have yet to receive their Black Cards, they will still have their Gold Cards to be used to withdraw cash, purchase goods, or simply to gain access to their funds.
  • Issuance of new Black Cards has been suspended, partly in view of some reviewing issues with respect to regulations and compliance.
  • Whatever the sources and channels, until they announce something to the contrary, there rests no immediate rush in migrating on account of the sudden issuance of new Black Cards for any cause of reason.

How Many Are Affected & Unmigrated Cards

  • Reports have suggested that more than 400,000 Gold Cards are being utilized and have yet to migrate.
  • Some of those unmigrated cards find themselves sitting in far-flung, rural, or at-risk areas where it’s just too hard to reach any migration sites.
  • While the MSA between SASSA and Postbank is still under review or in some state of flux, this very endorsement of the Gold Card’s continuity acts as their safety net.

What Beneficiaries Should Be Doing

  1. Do not panic if you have yet to do your migration-the Gold Card remains valid, and the payments are not supposed to be stopped.
  2. Keep yourself well-informed on card migration issues only through sources issued by SASSA or PostBank.
  3. Go to card replacement sites at your own convenience, and keep migrating to Black Cards wherever possible, so you are not forced into last-minute decisions.
  4. Protect your card and PIN-any kind of card-make sure that fraudsters do not get hold of your card information.
