Millions of grant recipients in South Africa depend on social grants, whose date, amounts, and procedures turn out to have dire consequences if confused one with the other. Wrapped in confusion with regard to what dates would be expected for the 2025 October payout and about the payment schedule itself, SASSA has come forth with a release describing it. This article basically includes an overview of all payment dates and bargaining about the actual recent increases, the recent issues affecting the beneficiaries, and more.
Confirmed Dates for Payment for October 2025
The following dates for the regular social grant payments (i.e., Social Relief of Distress Cash Grant being excluded) in October 2025 are confirmed by SASSA:
- Thursday, 2 October: Older Persons / Pension (ages 60-74)
- Friday, 3 October: Disability Grant
- Monday, 6 October: Child Support, Foster Care, Care Dependency, Grant-in-Aid, Other Children’s Grants
- The above dates confirm the usual routine of older persons and disability-related grants being paid at the beginning of each month, then child-related and other grants being paid out for during the first few days of the month.
October grants, however, will have a wider window during which they can be paid: The 2nd through the 6th.
Grant Amounts & October 2025 Increase
Small Increase Announced: For October 2025, SASSA will effect a small increase argumenting a chronology of 10 across many core grants of help, including old persons, disability, war veterans, and care dependency. The increase is, of course, modest and may, in any event, offer some comfort against the ever-rising cost of living.
Rates After Increase
Some of the grants being increased with effect from 1 October 2025:
- Old Age (60-74 years): R2,310 to R2,320
- Old Age (75+ years): R2,330 to R2,340
- Disability Grant: R2,310 to R2,320
- Care Dependency Grant: same to R2,320
- Childcare grants, however, are not receiving this increase, with the announcement suggesting no benefit for child support grants.
The Media Statement from SASSA has been officially published confirming the increase of the grant amounts as of October 2025.
Procedural Updates & Some Changes
Temporary office closure-Johannesburg. After 15 September 2025, following allegations of fraud against the officials, the SASSA-Johannesburg local office has been closed temporarily. Since then, SASSA has been sending services to alternative locations (community halls, clinics) for any ongoing activities.
The Post Bank Agreement and matters of banking
One of the issues is still the limbo regarding the Master Service Agreement (MSA) between SASSA and Postbank. SASSA and Postbank have reassured beneficiaries that, irrespective of circumstances of changes in contract, payment of grants shall remain uninterrupted. Beneficiaries are therefore requested not to change banks at the eleventh hour and to verify that their banking details remain intact to guarantee the uninterrupted handing over of payments.
Procedural Updates & Key Changes
Temporary Closure of Johannesburg Office. SASSA’s Johannesburg local office has been temporarily closed starting 15 September 2025 due o fraud allegations involving officials. Services in the area have been redirected to alternate venues (community halls, clinics) to maintain operations.
