The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) officially confirms the R10 increment of major social grants payable starting October 2025. The intended upliftment to vulnerable households confronting rising living costs was announced in line with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s 2025/26 national budget. The increase will include grant categories such as the Old Age Grants, Disability Grants, and Care Dependency Grants, thereby increasing slightly the payout to millions of beneficiaries starting next month.
Grant Amounts Update for Beneficiaries
Beginning October 2025, beneficiaries of SASSA will see a small increase applied across a SWOT analysis of social grants. The Old Age Grant for beneficiaries between the ages of 60 and 74 shall increase from R2,310 to R2,320, and those aged 75 and over shall receive R2,340, up from R2,330. The Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant shall increase from R2,310 to R2,320, whilst within the War Veterans Grant, there shall be yet another increase to R2,340. These worthwhile increments have been engineered by the government to help South Africans handle inflation and rising costs of basic necessities.”
Payment Schedule for October 2025
SASSA also published the updated October 2025 payment schedule as per the new rates. Old Age Grants will be paid on 2 October 2025, followed by the Disability Grants the following day on 3 October 2025, and then all the Children’s and other dependent grants would start from 6 October 2025. SASSA has assured the beneficiaries that these dates shall remain the same and that all system-related updates have been completed to allow for a smooth transition into payment of the new amounts.
The Means Behind the Increase
As small as a R10 increase might seem, unfortunately, here lies social symbolism and actual social support for the poorest of South Africa. According to the CEO of SASSA, Themba Matlou, the increase was a “crucial intervention” to cushion beneficiaries against economic times. The increase is indeed the second in a two-stage adjustment of social grants for 2025, as an earlier increase was effected in April 2025. With increasingly mounting economic pressures, these small-step increases are the government’s effort to maintain a responsive and sustainable grant system.
